Canterbury Book Store is still considering the idea of a “Read-Along/Book Club/Discussion Group” starting soon. We have permission from author Charlotte McConaghy to do several virtual reading sessions of her book, Migrations, with a discussion of the book via Zoom following the readings. A description from the back of the book (listed on Goodreads) is below.
I think the best way to manage the moving parts is to video tape the reading in sections for those who require or prefer having a book read to them. The sections read for the video recording would be assigned to the rest of the group and just the discussion would take place via Zoom so the time requirement online wouldn’t be too onerous. The Zoom sessions would be recorded and emailed to those who can’t make the actual Zoom meeting, so that they can still hear others’ responses to the book discussion and keep up with the conversations. Nothing will or may be published publicly online, and anything that is recorded will be deleted after the book is completed, per an agreement with the author.
For those who would like to purchase the book to participate, we would need to get an estimate of the number of books to order and Canterbury Book Store can provide a discount based on the number of books ordered.
To sign up, you can email (canterburybookstore (insert an “at” sign here) gmail (insert a “dot com” here, these measures to confound spambots), facebook message (https://www.facebook.com/Canterburybookstore), call (906-786-0751), or visit the bookstore.
In order to participate in the “read-along” portion of the book club, you must have means to play the video which can be emailed or provided with a flash drive (for a small fee).
In order to participate in the Zoom discussions, you must have access to the internet and to a computer that can use the Zoom app.
Goodreads gives it a 4.25 star rating:
“Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay. Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny’s history begins to unspool—a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime—it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds. When Franny's dark secrets catch up with her, how much is she willing to risk for one more chance at redemption?
Epic and intimate, heartbreaking and galvanizing, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is an ode to a disappearing world and a breathtaking page-turner about the possibility of hope against all odds.”
